Environmental Enhancement Loans

Most farmers understand the benefits of improving the sustainability of their farms. But while some benefits require only a minor change of practice, other benefits may require significant investment.

MASC's Environmental Enhancement Loans assist farmers in modifying their current operations or management practices to become more environmentally sustainable while maintaining a viable enterprise.

Environmental Enhancement Loans finance the farmer's share of project costs, and provide an advance on government contributions available from the Canada Manitoba Environmental Farm Action Program (EFAP) and the Manitoba Sustainable Agriculture Practices Program (MSAPP).

Program coverage focuses on Beneficial Management Practices (BMP) projects, such as improved manure storage, handling and treatment, relocation of livestock/horticulture facilities and other BMPs that may involve a substantial capital commitment.

Program Features

An EE loan provides a farmer with suitable financing to cover their own costs of project implementation, and advances any money to be issued by the EFAP or MSAPP programs through cost sharing agreements, which usually isn’t available until after the project is completed.

Eligibility

Eligible Applicants

Qualifying applicants can be individuals, joint farm units, partnerships, corporations or cooperatives. An applicant must be 18 years of age or older, a Manitoba resident and a Canadian citizen or lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence.

Recognizing the importance of BMP projects, MASC waives its regular eligibility criteria, including the applicant's net worth limit.

Eligible Projects

Loans are primarily intended for, but not limited to, BMP projects with significant costs associated with the construction, improvement or relocation of farm operation infrastructure. Loan eligibility is dependent upon acceptance of the project by Manitoba Agriculture, Food & Rural Initiatives (MAFRI).

Note: financing parameters differ for Manitoba’s hog farmers and other livestock farmers. Hog farmers can obtain credit for sustainable manure management projects through MASC’s Manure Management Loan (MML) program. Information and applications for the Manure Management Financial Assistance Program are available at all MAFRI offices.

Other livestock farmers will continue to have access to credit through the EE loan and EFAP cost sharing agreements. For more information, please consult your local MASC Lending Representative.
