ALUS: An Ecological Goods & Services Research Project

Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS)

'ALUS: An Ecological Goods & Services Research Project - Manitoba' is a voluntary, incentive-based environmental program that recognizes and rewards a producer's positive land management practices. The Manitoba ALUS Pilot Project has run for 3 years (2006 - 2008) in the RM of Blanshard, located northwest of Brandon, Manitoba, as an evaluation of the ALUS concept.

The ALUS concept acknowledges that, although Canadians value and depend on ecological landscapes such as wetlands, riparian areas, and other sensitive lands, there are costs incurred by individual landowners to maintain these areas. Through the ALUS program, payments are made to these landowners to offset the costs of ecological maintenance. In this way, Canadians benefit from the conservation of environmental areas, while landowners are encouraged to manage their land in ways that provide greater ecological benefits.

ALUS was initially developed by the Keystone Agricultural Producers, and the pilot project is taking place with the partnership of Delta Waterfowl Foundation, Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Manitoba Agriculture, Food & Rural Initiatives, the RM of Blanshard, Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council, the Little Saskatchewan River Conservation District, and the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC).

MASC, acting as a delivery agent for the Manitoba Government, administers payments to landowners enrolled in the ALUS program. For more information about the Manitoba ALUS Pilot Project, please visit the links below:
